Staplehurst Music Centre: growing and performing

This month, Staplehurst Music Centre is delighted that it has relaunched its Music Foundation classes for children. These fun and lively classes focus on learning music through play.

Our youngest musicians (2-5 years) experience music through songs, dance and rhymes. They focus on developing skills such as pulse, rhythm and use of percussion. In a recent lesson, they pretended to be bears, made some musical stew and flew kites. Their proud teacher has reported that they did a great job at keeping a steady beat.

Our group for older musicians (6-8 years) provides a natural progression, offering an opportunity to play their own instruments or try out some of ours. The group have learned rhythms (using insect names for the different length of notes). They are working on a song called “One note tune” (although it has more than one note in it!) and are also learning Baby Shark.

At the time of writing, students and teachers are looking forward to some exciting performances coming up. Staplehurst Music Centre will be performing with the Staplehurst Children’s Choir at Eco Day at All Saints Church on 14 May. The Rock Band is playing a mix of old favourite covers and new compositions, and the Chamber Music Group is playing music from around the world, from a Jamaican rumba to a Slavonic dance via the Ukrainian national anthem.

And don’t miss the Staplehurst School Summer Fair on 25 June, when Staplehurst Music Centre will also be delighted to perform. Many of the musicians are current or former pupils at the school, and the school is also where weekly lessons and ensembles are held, so performing at the fair will be great fun.
